Aisha Mosque & Islamic Centre
Our History
1960s – 1970s
In the early 1960s and 1970s the number of migrants from South Asia increased in Walsall which necessitated the building of a Mosque and Islamic centre for the Muslim community. Initially, a small house at 97 Rutter Street was acquired for religious purposes but soon became a victim of the redevelopment plan. Thus, activities were relocated to 25 Corporation Street. The old, decaying building was used nonetheless as the headquarters for the all important next transition, that is, the first ever purpose built Mosque in Walsall.
1983 – 1988
Work started on building the Mosque in 1983, then not yet named, on land bought from the Council. The foundation was laid on 13/05/1983 exactly and the Mosque was completed exactly five years later, in 1988. Eid prayers were held at the site before the construction was fully finished. The majority of the funds were raised locally, with some contributions from overseas. The Mosque was built by the local community and, where necessary, sub-contractors were engaged for tasks beyond local capabilities.
1998 – 1999
In 1998, an extension was deemed necessary and work began for 6 classrooms, 2 education offices, a lift (which could also take a coffin) and an additional hall upstairs. This addition more than doubled the size of the Mosque. Once again the funds and majority of the extension work was completed by the local community. This truly is a community Mosque which reflects the diverse ethnic mix and works in partnership with other organisations.
2013 – 2016
In 2013, another extension was proposed to address the need for better facilities. The renovation included separating the ablution (Wudu) area from the toilets, creating additional community rooms for men and women, and designing spaces for multiple purposes, such as bereavement seating, Madrassah school classrooms, and community events. The project also added a fully equipped mortuary, children’s toilets, a large storeroom, a meeting room, and living accommodation. This phase of work was completed in 2016.
2018 – current
In 2018, the Mosque embarked on another significant expansion on the opposite side of the building. Plans included new kitchens and dining areas for both men and women, larger community rooms, and new womens’ toilet and ablution areas, including a disabled toilet and baby-changing facilities. The entrance areas were also redesigned to accommodate more shoe racks and enhance the Mosque’s overall aesthetic. Construction is approximately 50% complete, with full completion expected in 2026.
The current Aisha Mosque & Islamic Centre comprises a ground floor and an upper floor. The women’s prayer gallery and hall, situated on the upper floor, overlooks the main prayer hall on the ground floor, providing a view of the Mosque’s striking dome. This Mosque is a vibrant reflection of Walsall’s diverse ethnic community and works collaboratively with various local organisations.
